Chapter 14

I leaned back in my seat at Angel Force and sipped the rich hot chocolate with cream Dominic had brought over when we got back from our movie star mission.

“You’ve got lipstick on your shirt,” I said to him.

He winced and scrubbed at his shirt collar. “The things I do for this place. When I got Jade on her own, she turned into a tigress. She wouldn’t leave me alone. Her hands were everywhere. I mean, everywhere. It was scary.”

“You’re a gorgeous angel with a big heart. Of course she’ll be interested in you.”

“I kept telling her I was seeing someone, but she wouldn’t listen.”

“You dazzled her with too much angel magic,” I said. “I didn’t know you had it in you.”

He chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. “Neither did I. I’m a babe magnet.”

I laughed as I wiped a mustache of cream off my top lip.

Cassiel came out of Dazielle’s office and strode over. She took her own mug of hot chocolate and settled in the seat next to me. “What do we do now?”

I set down my mug. “Let’s look at what we’ve got. We have a frozen siren with a long history of misusing her power to get what she wants.”

“And we have the sign saying only true love’s kiss will break the magic,” Dominic said.

“Which is a big clue that this is personal. Nasana broke someone’s heart or took something from them they cared about, and this is their revenge. They want the world to know Nasana isn’t so amazing. She’s exploiting her powers and harming others,” I said.

“So we’re still looking at the guys she messed with or stole from?” Cassiel said.

“I reckon so. We have Kiefer, her brother, the unfortunate siren with the backfiring power. His life has been ruined because his magic went wrong. It must be tough to see his sister being so successful, while he gets shoved in a back office and left to wither.”

“That’ll make him resentful,” Cassiel said.

“And bitter,” Dominic said. “Kiefer must have had it so easy when his siren ability worked. Suddenly, that was taken from him.”

“The problem with Kiefer is he has an alibi,” Cassiel said.

“He does,” I said. “But he also has a motive for wanting Nasana out of the way. His bitterness pushed him to do something drastic.”

Cassiel slurped up some hot chocolate. “So a great motive but a solid alibi.”

“There’s also Garratt,” I said. “He was the last guy Nasana had a significant relationship with. And as we discovered, he’s still in her thrall and convinced he’s the perfect guy for her and they’ll get back together.”

“Would he have frozen Nasana if he planned to get her back?” Dominic said.

“Maybe he thought by freezing her and then breaking the spell with true love’s kiss, it would show Nasana their love was genuine, and he was the right guy for her. The problem with that is what he’s feeling is fake. Nasana’s got him turned around and his head in a whirl because she’s sirened him to get what she wants.
